The Wizard of Oz Character Auditions

Character Auditions:

– Saturday February 17th, 2:00-5:00
– 5th grade –  12th grade attending PDA
– $10 audition fee
– Audition Form Submission Deadline: Friday, February 16th

We choose our character’s based on age and acting abilities, not just dance abilities, which means all levels are welcome to come and audition if they fit the age requirements (please see below with audition requirements).
Character rehearsals will take place during the weekends of May and beginning of June with possible extra rehearsals during the day (after the kids have finished school). They might also be asked to attend certain classes if they have been placed in dances as their characters.  Please remember that even though we double and triple cast parts, there are not enough leads for all who audition, but we want to make sure everyone who is interested in joining DOES get the opportunity to participate so, everyone who auditions will get an extra special part.

About the Audition:

There will be call-backs so prepare yourself.  This is an audition, which means not everyone will get the part they desire.  We recommend you audition for as many parts as possible.  Where you are dancing in the show will factor into what parts we can actually give you (we can work with a reasonable quick change but nothing that would stall out the show).  Main characters will be double/triple cast but need to understand that they may not be able to also be in in all of their dances in the shows where they have been cast as a character.

2-3:30:  Main Characters High School students only

These characters will primarily audition lip syncing as follows:

Dorothy:  know the song Over the Rainbow, Follow the Yellow Brick Road
Scarecrow:  know the song If I Only had a Brain, Follow the Yellow Brick Road
Tin Man:  know the song If I Only had a Heart, Follow the Yellow Brick Road
Lion:  know the song If I Only had the Nerve, Follow the Yellow Brick Road
Glinda:  know her part from Munchkinland (“Come out, come out, wherever you are and meet the young lady who fell from a star…….etc……)

These characters will primarily audition with specific movements and mannerisms with the focus on acting verses lip syncing.  Some instrumental music that is character specific will be used.

Wicked Witch
Wizard
Auntie Em
Miss Gulch

3:30-5:00:  Parts for all students 5th grade and older

These characters will primarily audition lip syncing as follows:

Munchkins: Ding Dong the Witch is Dead and Follow the Yellow Brick Road
Lullaby League:  Must be on pointe. Know this specific part from the Munchkinland song
Lollypop Guild: Know this specific part from the Munchkinland song
Citizens of Oz:  Know the song The Merry Old Land of Oz

Acting/movement oriented parts:

Apple Trees:  This is an optional acting/movement oriented part that creates the scene of the angry apple throwing trees under the spell of the witch just before Dorothy meets the Tin Man.  Specific instrumental music will be used.
Cornfield:  This is also an acting/movement part creating a scene of the cornfield just before Dorothy meets the Scarecrow.

What to Wear for the Audition:

Please dress in simple dance attire, all black if possible.  Keep in mind we are not auditioning for costumes, we want to see your face and your expression of the character.  No character specific make-up, but full stage make-up if possible.  Hairstyle your choice.  No full costumes but you can bring the following a simple OPTION if you wish to:
  • Dorothy:  shoes to wear that resemble the ruby slippers (slip-on shoes of some sort, lower heel, any color or style)
  • Scarecrow:  a flannel shirt
  • Lion:  something that you can use like a tail if you want to pin it on a leotard
