Casting Notes

Nutcracker roles are carefully given based on age, size, and skill level. Students might be in a particular dance for several years, but the dance may be choreographed or costumed differently, or they will dance different parts of the same dance; then as the dancer matures, they may and often should be given the opportunity to master a particular top roll and so be cast in it repeatedly. If they aspire to certain roles and did not make it this year, we encourage them to keep working hard at their technique and to try again next year! Coveted roles are earned based on several factors; the dancer’s technical ability, stage presence and performance quality, all play a part in these decisions.

Additionally, we are looking at the dancer’s full range of work at the studio, which includes their audition as well as their attendance and work in regularly scheduled classes throughout the dance year. The existing costumes also need to be coordinated with the dancers. Enjoy growing, discovering and embracing many new challenges and accomplishments on your journey from studio to stage!

Nutcracker Roles

This sheet breaks down the Nutcracker Ballet by acts, scenes, and dances.  This is extremely helpful for those who are new to Nutcracker. Early rehearsals are when the many “layers” of dances are rehearsed independently, then gradually we start to combine the dances to create the “scene” or “Act”.  Some parts may vary in their name and not all parts are always danced.
